Mental Health 

Overview

Mental health is an extremely important part of our health in today's society and it is vital that we care for our minds just as much as we care for our bodies. Studies show that yoga can significantly improve both physical and mental health, but let's focus on the mental. 

Benefits

In terms of mental health, yoga is known to calm the nervous system. The physical poses, as well as the breathing exercises and meditation helps relieve stress, lower blood pressure, and sharpens concentration.

Findings 

According to a study that was meant to examine the long term effects of yoga on people who had issues with mental health in the past (such as major depressive disorder), they found that every participant showed improvements in mental health when yoga was implemented into their schedule even for a small portion of time in their week. After the study was performed, most of the patients involved showed a decrease in depressive symptoms (Kinser, Elswick, & Kornstein, 2014).
